That’s a weird last name isn’t it – Sajak? Hmm, never noticed until I had to spell it. We’re not really going to be honoring Mr. Sajak tonight on Gashouse Live (Tuesdays 8pm ET) but we will be discussing his recent interview where he admits to being hammered on Wheel of Fortune. He just went up 30 points in my book.

Krantz will be joining the show tonight. Our featured band this week is a great Philly trio known as Penrose. We’ll be talking about this band along with all the important music news in the world. We’ve got more stories featuring donkey semen and the pink goo inside McNuggets. Plus our question of the week comes to us from aroundphilly.com: Should all Philly cabs be wheelchair accessible?

Plus we’ll fill you on The Great Big Snowman 4G event happening this Saturday in Lancaster, PA. So tune in tonight at 8pm ET for incredible entertainment, followed by another great show at 10pm, Night Views Radio. All of this only on www.gashouseradio.com

Well, perhaps not quite wild. In fact, we might just play some acoustic tunes and chat a bit about stuff. Y’know.

Ellie Jamison

Ellie Jamison

In today’s Sunshinecast, there’s a chat and some tunes from Suffolk-based singer-songwriter Ellie Jamison, who’s working on her first EP at the moment. I chatted with Ellie on Thursday of last week, via Skype and it was rather a grown-up, sensible presenter and musician talking about music type of interview (albeit with a little bit of me cooing over the fact that Ellie has twin toddlers) and all in all, fairly dignified.

Then, last night, Katy Haymer came over to the studio to play an acoustic session and ‘have a little bit of a  chat’. H’mmn.  This picture (left) is of Katy playing live. See how sensible she appears to be?  And they say the camera never lies…

I chatted with Katy about her new acoustic EP which is due for release in the next month and the album she’s currently working on, and she played a few songs. Then we set the world to rights, as you do. I’m still editing the recording; I may leave out the part where we explain in detail how chocolate chip cookies could save the world, if only enough people just BELIEVED in their power. Or I may give you the recipe. We’ll see…

There’s also new music from sixteen year old singer songwriter Emily Sargant, female-fronted alternative acoustic band Hook and superb jazz and blues vocalist Claire Simone. I’ll also play some songs by bands featuring the male of the species, because not all boys are smelly.

Next week, I hope to have returned to something resembling adulthood, in time for the return of Ian Button to the studio (I was experiencing a huge technical fail, last time he came to the studio). Come join the chat room at 1pm Eastern/ 6pm UK today, if you’re at a loose end.

Love and sunshine!

Only the Good continues to mow down the competition in our daily promo of Band vs Band. They faced several other hard rock bands similar to their style of music. However today they’ll be facing the folk stylings of Pawns or Kings.

A bare bone folk project from half of The Race to Olvido. This is a project focused on the emotional side of music. The debut album “Letters to Lucy” is an answer to the way life sometimes seems to fall off the path you thought it was following. Vocalist Ed Stengel debated on quitting music for good until they discovered the folk revival going on in the Americana and London folk scenes. Suddenly music not only made sense again, but it had a depth previous unheard of in mainstream music.

We’ll play one song from each band back to back at the beginning, middle, and end of the show. We ask you the listener to vote with the thumbs up/down buttons on our player page and on our Android/iPhone apps. These votes will determine who stays on to battle the following day.

We’ll also be playing #RadioRoulette for your chance to win all kinds of prizes. We’ll cover all the stories we didnt get to on yesterday’s episode, and we might even have a guest or two stopping by the studio. Tune in to Brain Office, 5pm ET, only on www.gashouseradio.com

This week’s featured band is also their debut on Gashouse Radio, although I’m not sure why it took us so long to discover these guys. Penrose, a hard rock band out of King of Prussia, have been rocking stages from Philly to NY for years.

The band is composed of three brothers. I can’t imagine being in a band together with all brothers (the fist fighting that must go on at practice!) but these guys obviously make it work. Their sound is a culmination of blues, garage rock with twist of psychedelic to create a style all their own.

2010 was big year for Penrose. In addition to flying down to Austin to perform at SXSW and playing CMJ, the band released their full length album Devil’s Grip which you can on their Bandcamp page. They did not slow down in 2011, releasing a new single and touring the country.

This year Penrose will be back in the studio by Spring to lay down some songs they’ve already started writing. They’ll be working with well-known Philly producer Bill Moriarty. If that wasn’t enough, the band is playing this Friday night at World Cafe with some other great bands including Zelazowa and Flux Capacitor. This will be the last show for a little while as they continue to write and record, so don’t miss this one!

And be sure to tune in all this week as Penrose will be in heavy rotation. We’ll also be playing them on Brain Office (weekdays at 5pm ET) and discussing the band on Gashouse Live (Tuesdays, 8pm ET).
