Lemon Hill in an up and coming 3 piece Alt-Rock band based out of Philadelphia. Note: These new tracks were made available to the public in February on their URL and Soundcloud links – both provide in this article.
Lemon Hill : Jake Dean (bass) , Lou Graff (guitar), Domenic Malandro (lead vocals & sax).
As I gave these 2 songs a right and proper listen I have to admit I like the band. It has remnants of classic Psychedelic Rock of the past. I’m a huge fan of Psychedelic rock. Pioneers like Black Crows, BTO, Grand Funk, Three Dog Night, Elton John for example provided music that was a bit weird but also very real and somewhat comical all at the same time. They don’t call it Psychedelic Rock for nothing. Whether my mood is upbeat or downbeat, serious or playful, extroverted or introverted, there are musical choices aplenty to complement, enhance or counteract it on these latest songs by Lemon Hill.
Track 1 “Love Arrives” is a more mellower rock piece that reminds me of the Black Crows. Track 2 “Medium Man” Is more Blues based and reminds me of early Bruce Springsteen. In my own words I’ll call these 2 songs powerful, very real and at times a very “in the pocket” groovy. Expect a jagged edge Psychedelic Folk/Rock musical combination with a Philadelphia zip. It has flavorings of creep rock that’s a little bit out of control, chaotic, perhaps surprisingly for someone whose primary genera is Rock, the emphasis here is not on simple 4/4 rhythms shall we say. No Lemon Hill digs deeper than that. Both songs have a contemplative feel, becoming almost hypnotic in places. The rocked out textures of this 3 piece are especially evocative. In the end they both has a very psychedelic, progressive dance-rock feel to it, lending more towards a David Bowie feel but it could even be called dare I say – mainstream. Some moments are a bit emotional and a little too honest. Both songs deliver a particularly steady-thrumming bass line that adds firmness and tension. Vocals from Malandro are extremely unique and off the hook good.
All songs are a return to straight Psychedelic Punk Rock with a stuttering rhythm section underpinning some terrific work from all involved. Lemon Hill appears to be one Philadelphia based band who are paying their dues having been around for 10 years, It’s a bit puzzling this is their first release though? I get the impression these guys are interesting to see live. These 2 tracks will defiantly get the blood pumping and are a great pickup for those who like Psychedelic Punk rock with a Bluesy-unplugged musical foundation. While this is music you could work or play to, it’s most suited to a more mind melding contemplation. Now isn’t that something we could all use a little more of in our lives right no? Lemon Hill sets it all to well.
