Enter Craving Strange 4 member New York based rock band that just released their latest CD “A Life Exceptional” in 2014 (Horian Records). On the upside, you can expect 4 semi-experienced rock musicians who champion a high intensity sound against a passionate backdrop of vocals from amazing front man Jimmy G. Other members include: Matt Abbate (Lead Guitar), Jim Tassone (Drums/Percussion), Tommy Balls (Bass). Some of the arrangements have an almost “kick-ass” delivery. With “A Life Exceptional” expect 12 passionate clips of spot-on alt-rock with straight forward arrangements that are unique within their own right.

Ninety seconds into the first track “Dirty Rock” two of the first things crossing your mind is: 1) How undeniably infectious the music sounds, and 2) why the heck haven’t I heard of Craving Strange before? But let’s not get to ahead of ourselves here. Track 1 “Dirty Rock” lifts off the ground nicely. It’s a hooky prelude with a killer chorus and yes, it’s still ringing in my head. Track 2 “Your Last Day Alive” is another intriguing anthem which is probably my favorite track on the CD. “A Life Exceptional” is another impassioned piece  while “Break the Skin” is an intellectual affirmation of sorts. Captivating “Denial” shows how diverse they’re at times funky writing style can be. The CD as a whole does a nice job at offering a wide variety of media; some slow, some fast, some hard some super hard.

All tracks are passionate, while some hit hard with a ring of truth to them. As a vocalist Jimmy G. brings the mojo and has a lot of vocal appeal. Taking my research to You Tube it’s safe to say Craving Strange has a solid live show proving this is one band that believes in putting an emphasis on good playing and solid heartfelt vocals at their core. One of my favorite things about this CD is how their musical style sort of flows and ebbs with bursting intensity then quickly withdraws again into melodic seclusion. I found this to be a very cool trait of Craving Strange. Jimmy G. is a master at matching this emotional flow with his voice and emotion. In many ways Jimmy G. and the rest of this band are musical Chameleons because you never really know what’s around the corner. Is it hard, soft, passionate, jovial or scornful? “
A Life Exceptional is a really good album and sets the standard for new age rock. It combines a masterful string of inspirational subjects, and well thought out lyrics for today’s thinking man/fan. Taking all of this into consideration you begin to understand why these 4 are making such a splash up North. The lyrics are powerful and full of intrigue, passion, and wisdom. I can also hear a bit of Smashing Pumpkins, Fuel, Default, Smile Empty Soul, Crossfade, Trapt and even Saliva. All of this and more makes Craving Strange an extremely hot commodity, to say the least. In the end these four do a marvelous job of extolling emotional energy via a strong 13 track release called “A Life Exceptional.” CD also contains 2 bonus tracks.
